JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Coder, Hospital Inpatient

JOB GROUP: Health Information Management

JOB FAMILY:  Coding

JOB PROFILE SUMMARY: Responsible for coding and abstracting inpatient accounts in accordance with coding guidelines

JOB PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assigns accurate diagnostic & procedure codes according to clinical documentation & official coding guidelines for inpatient hospital accounts
  • Coordinates with the clinical documentation & quality teams to ensure validation of Medicare Severity Diagnosis Related Group (MSDRG), patient safety indicators & hospital acquired conditions are supported by physician documentation to support appropriate coding
  • Monitors assigned work queues to ensure all records are charged in a timely manner
  • Generates coding queries for clarification regarding physician documentation as needed
  • Stays abreast of all changes in coding conventions & coding updates
  • Performs other duties as assigned

EDUCATION: High school diploma or equivalent

EXPERIENCE: Two years’ experience

CERTIFICATION:

  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) – American Health Information Management Assoc (AHIMA)
  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC®) – American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC)
  • Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) – American Health Information Management Assoc (AHIMA)
  • Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) – American Health Information Management Assoc (AHIMA)

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent lifting/carrying & pushing/pulling objects weighing 0-25 lbs.
  • Frequent sitting, standing, walking, reaching & repetitive foot/leg & hand/arm movements
  • Frequent use of vision & depth perception for distances near (20 inches or less) & far (20 feet or more) & to identify and distinguish colors
  • Frequent use of hearing & speech to share information through oral communication
  • Frequent keyboard use/data entry
  • Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting & gripping
  • Occasional lifting/carrying & pushing/pulling objects weighing 25-50 lbs.
  • Rare climbing
